The paper was founded by Samuel Storey, who also founded Portsmouth and Sunderland Newspapers which became Northeast Press in 1999. The plant that printed the Echo was originally in the centre of Sunderland, but it moved to Pennywell in 1976, this newer plant was equipped with more up-to-date technology – such as the ability to print in colour.
